Mark Pilkington

What's the talk about?

Pursuing a lifelong interest in UFOs, Mark Pilkington travelled to America in search of the truth behind the most pervasive mystery of our modern age. As he spoke to intelligence agents, disinformation specialists and UFO hunters a surprising story began to emerge: instead of covering-up stories of crashed spacecraft, alien contacts and secret underground bases for the past 60 years, the US intelligence agencies had been promoting them all along. UFOs, one of the Pentagon's greatest secrets were, and still are, the ultimate weapons of mass deception. In this illustrated presentation based on his book Mirage Men, Mark suggests when, how and why the UFO myth was born, and how to keep your head while those around you, including those holding the heavy weaponry, are losing theirs.

Mark Pilkington is a writer with a lifelong interest in anomalous human experience and the fringes of science. His writing has appeared in The Guardian, Fortean Times, Frieze, The Wire, Sight and Sound and The Anomalist, amongst others. His new book, Mirage Men, is published by Constable & Robinson on 29 July - see for more info.

His first book, 'Far Out: 101 Strange Tales from Science's Outer Edge' was described by the New Scientist as an 'entertaining celebration of science's dreamers'. Mark also runs Strange Attractor Press and edits its Journal.
